An Overview

Brief Background

The beginning of the Department of  Tourism Studies (DTS), University, may be traced back to 2002, when it was established as a centre for advanced Culture and Tourism Education and Research. Present time this department name is  M.T.S. (Master of Tourism Studies).

Though Uttarakhand is the richest in the cultural heritage, teaching of the ancient Indian Culture and Spiritual tourism, Health tourism, Rural tourism were most neglected in the universities of the state. Looking into this discrepancy our department- the department of Tourism was established. The goals and objectives of the department art to provide the basic background of higher learning and research in the region, highlighting the grandeur, heritage and culture of the area in chronological order and develop the job potential for the region in the area of tourism and culture.

Travel & Tourism is one of the largest foreign exchange earners, providing employment directly & indirectly to millions of people worldwide through many service areas. Some of these service areas are the govt. tourism dept., the immigration and the western services, the travel agencies, the airlines, the tour operators, and the hotels. The career in the travel tourism industry is essentially concerned with providing services for people who are away from home, on business of holiday. It requires assessing the needs of tourists and businessmen and helping them make the best possible travel arrangement from the many travel options available.

Our Mission

The mission of the Department is to become an agent of change for principled, socially responsible and creative leadership in culture and tourism by providing the highest quality education for present and future leaders and advance the understanding and practice of tourism management through research and outreach. We strive towards inspiring people and enriching cultural and tourism management practice and leadership by:

  • Designing distinctive programs which are relevant, contemporary and participative
  • Developing individuals personally as well as professionally
  • Promoting practical management skills alongside theoretical business knowledge
  • Generating research, both theoretical and actionable
  • Fostering a vibrant and entrepreneurial business culture and
  • Delivering solutions to the society that are sustainable, responsible and pragmatic
