Ans. The department emphasizes the spoken aspects of English starting from basic knowledge of accepted pronunciation to communication competence. In this subject listening and speaking skills are covered.
2. What is the Importance of English Communication Skills in modern era?
Ans. In the present scenario, people need to speak English in connection with their social, academic and professional situations. It is a valuable qualification for any one who wants to develop a successful career.
3. Is it related to Personality development?
Ans. Personality development is an integral part of the course content especially in the semesters in which presentation skills, discussion skills and preparation for job interviews are taught. We teach non-verbal communication which covers postures, gestures, facial expressions, dress, manners and ways to overcome nervousness and tenseness.
4. What are the papers in this subject?
Ans. There are six papers in all in this subject, one in each semester:
Paper I: Pronunciation Drills
Paper II: Informal Conversation
Paper III: Formal Conversation
Paper IV: Conducting Public Programmes
Paper V: Public Speaking
Paper VI: Interview and Group Discussion
5. What is the subject all about?
Ans. Listening skills develop ability in the students to understand the meaning of spoken English and to extract detailed and specific information from the spoken text and the video clips. Speaking skills enable them to interact in conversational English in a range of contexts, to contribute more effectively to group discussion, to practice the necessary elements of successful presentations and to prepare well for job interviews.
6 What is the methodology of teaching?
Ans. A variety of teaching methods ranging from lectures, role playing, audio-visual sessions, language games, group discussions, visual-recording of presentations, mock interviews are used.
7. Are there any practical classes?
Ans. Practicals are conducted regularly in the language lab. Under the guidance and instructions of well-trained teachers, students take active participation in them and get practice in different activities with the help of modern equipments and aids. They can compare performance. In addition to them, group discussions on current issues, oral presentations, seminars and debates are held in the department on Saturdays with the view to encourage their public speaking ability and to help them shed their shyness, nervousness and inhibitions.
8. What are the plus points of the department?
Ans. Excluding their main subjects, students get the facility of learning this subject in all the under graduate courses. It is very useful for them to seek further education and to improve their career prospects.
